SANDIA NATIONAL LABORATORIES PULSED POWER FACILITIES: DESIGN AND ENGINEERING

Support, long-term management and operation of all major pulsed power facilities including Z/ZR, Z20, SATURN, HERMES III, APPRM, RITS 6, SPHINX, RHEPP, STAR, DICE, Sandia Lightning Simulator, High Power Microwave, Laser system development and general light lab activities in support of these larger facilities. Raytheon Ktech’s six main support functions include: Operations Maintenance & Engineering, diagnostics, Z refurbishment, engineering design and drafting, supporting technologies, and management responsibilities. Raytheon Ktech partners with SNL on a daily basis to effectively support customer programs and research initiatives.

Raytheon Ktech manufactured Power Conditioning
Modules now in service at LLNL’s NIF

NATIONAL IGNITION FACILITY’S (NIF) POWER CONDITIONING MODULE, LAWRENCE LIVERMORE NATIONAL LABORATORIES

Delivered complete capacitor bank systems, including trigger generators, control systems, gas and power chassis for the NIF’s Power condition Modules. Tested all systems and subsystems prior to shipment. Prepared test plans, assembly plans and other documents per LLNL requirements.

ZEBRA Accelerator

NEVADA TERAWATT FACILITY
PULSED POWER OPERATIONS,
UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA, RENO

The Nevada Terawatt Facility houses the ZEBRA accelerator which was moved from Los Alamos National Laboratories to the university in 1996 to facilitate a research program. Raytheon Ktech provided expertise and oversight to bring the accelerator online to an operational state. We generated a safety program for UNR staff and students, and in 2004 placed full time Raytheon Ktech engineers and technicians at the University to operate and maintain the accelerator. Zebra utilizes a 3.2 MV thirty-two stage Marx generator to supply the energy for Z-pinch experiments.

TARGET ASSEMBLY OPERATIONS

Work in partnership with Sandia National Laboratories, General Atomics, and Schafer Corporation to provide SNL’s Z Machine with high quality experimental targets for conducting High Energy Density Physics and Inertial Confinement Fusion Experiments. Raytheon Ktech provides staff and expertise for final assembly of this experimental hardware, including the building of wire arrays.

UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA LAS VEGAS, NEVADA SHOCKER FACILITY

Designed and delivered an upgraded Marx Generator for the Nevada Shocker Facility capable of delivering up to 1MV of output voltage to a matched load.
