Open Architecture Controllers

After spending years operating commercial robots with closed or proprietary controllers, our staff assisted Sandia National Laboratories in developing, integrating, and deploying Sandia-developed Open Architecture Controllers for robot and telerobotic applications.
Today, a variety of Open Architecture Controllers (OACs) are commercially-available for use in your robotic or automation project.

Our staff is well qualified with several commercially-available OACs such as Cimetrix CODE, Trellis, Steady-State Automation, etc.

Our experience with Open Architecture Controllers permits the rapid integration of customized path planners, real-time sensors, targeting and registration systems, and improved robot performance through rapid, highly accurate, non-compliant calibration procedures.

We firmly believe that OACs, along with simulation techniques such as Realistic Robot Simulation (RRS), will become industry standards permitting off-line programming of robots to become a reliable and standard approach to robot systems integration.
The payoff to the end-user is an affordable, easier-to-use, modifiable, faster-to-deploy robotic or automation system.

After years of publicly promoting the benefits of OACs (see Robotics World Summer 1998), the robotics industry has responded with the development of new controllers to enable intelligent, sensor and model-based robot applications.  Motoman has new products enabling such applications. 

Q: Does every robot application warrant an OAC-based approach?  
A: Absolutely not!
There are a multitude of high-speed, material handling applications that are completely compatible with standard robot controllers.  In such cases, cost-reduction and simplicity are obtained through the use of standard robot controllers.
